Why Study in Malaysia?

Geographically diverse and culturally rich, Malaysia is a study destination of choice with its UNESCO World Heritage sites and a unique Malaysian offerings. Malaysia is increasingly becoming a popular study destination because English is widely spoken in the society, accommodation is relatively cheap and the experience is very unique. Malaysia has increased its target of hosting international students to 250,000 by 2025. By the end of 2016, the nation has already attained a total of 172,886 international students.

International students from Malaysian school

There are international students who joined the local govertment school or any other private schools such as international schools and took the SPM or O-Level, or IGCSE at that schools.

How to join? Interested international students should apply at respective college or institution. What you should have?

  • A valid student pass
  • A good academic result (SPM or IGCSE or O-Level or equevalent)
  • A school leaving certificate
  • A passport book with minimum 12 months validity. If the passport book is less than 12 months valid by the time of your application, you must get it renewed first. You should renew it at your respective embassy in Malaysia.

Social Pass or Visit Pass holders

Social pass or visit pass are for tourist. When you come to Malaysia as a tourist, you cannot suddenly change your intention and want to become a student. You cannot apply to be a student in Malaysia with that social pass or visit pass. You must exit Malaysia and go back to your home country before you apply to be a student.

MM2H and dependent pass holders

Holders of dependent pass or Malaysia My Second Home (MM2H) pass must shorten their pass before they apply to any institution. They are not allowed to study using the dependent pass or MM2H pass.

Student Pass from language centers

International students with student pass from any language centers or those taking any skills or technical level program must exit Malaysia and apply to be a student from home country.

Resident Pass holders

Resident Pass holders may study in any higher institutions without converting their pass into student pass.

Overstayed students

These are students who study in Malaysia but their student pass (student visa) already expired and they did not or cannot renew it.

These type of student are illegal students. If they are caught by police or immigration officers, they will be put in jail or sent to detention camp, or will be deported back to their home country. In most cases, they will be black-listed from coming back to Malaysia.

What should you do if you are overstayed? Go back to your previous institution and request for an overstay clearance. The overstay clearance will enable you to exit Malaysia legally.

International students from other higher institutions in Malaysia

These are students who completed their study in various higher education institution in Malaysia such as colleges, university colleges or universities.

How to join? Interested international students should apply at respective college or institution. What you should have?

  • A valid student pass
  • A good academic result
  • A release letter from previous institution
  • Attendance report from previous institution
  • A passport book with minimum 12 months validity. If the passport book is less than 12 months valid by the time of your application, you must get it renewed first. You should renew it at your respective embassy in Malaysia.

International students from outside Malaysia

These are student who are in their home country and applying to come to Malaysia to study.
